May is Bike Month 2023

Are you ready for May is Bike Month?

Bike Month is just around the corner so get ready to ride! Are you tired of being cooped up with all this rain like we are? We hope you’ll join us—and bring a friend—in celebrating Bike Month throughout all of May.

SABA is proud to once again host May is Bike Month for the six-county SACOG region and we couldn’t be more excited. Festivities will kick off early at the end of April with the Breathe Bike Rodeo in W. Sacramento.

Throughout Bike Month, join us for in-person events, help your workplace top the leaderboards, encourage others, and win amazing prizes. Are you in?

Why Ride?

There are so many reasons to participate. First and foremost, riding your bike is fun! Plus, numerous studies have shown that being outside and getting exercise brings many positive mental and physical health benefits.

Bike Month offers something for everyone. Even if you haven’t ridden your bike since last year’s Bike Month (or longer), NOW is the time to pump up those tires. With so many people out riding throughout the month, you’ll feel more comfortable and confident on the roads. Of course, we hope you’ll enjoy it enough to make bicycling a part of your routine through summer and beyond.

Even one trip a week by bike instead of car makes a difference! Most car trips Americans take for errands are less than 3 miles, which is a distance easily covered by bike. Riding will keep you healthier, save you money, help our state reach its climate goals, and almost certainly put you in a better mood.

Sacramento has been participating in the national May is Bike Month event since 2005. Locally, our goal is to see a big jump in participants this year. The more people we have riding bicycles on a regular basis in the greater Sacramento region, the more pressure it puts on elected officials to funnel money towards better and safer active transportation projects. With last year’s rejection of Measure A by voters, it’s clear that we’re tired of the outdated, car-first mentality still being pushed by city and county officials, transportation planners, and developers.

Also, did we mention yet that you could win prizes? How cool is that? We bet you’ve never gotten a prize for driving to work.

How To Participate

(Spoiler alert: It’s easy!)

  1. Register to ride: Visit the official Bike Month page and register to ride. It’s free, quick, and easy. It’s important that you register before riding so we have an accurate count of 2023 participants.
  2. Ride: This is the fun part. You can log any rides you do, from commuting to work, riding to the store, a family ride to the park, or just a leisurely evening ride around your neighborhood.
  3. Recruit a friend to ride (and register): We can’t grow our movement alone and we need your help. Are you a seasoned rider who could help a neighbor plan a route? New riders often make the mistake of “biking their drive” which can lead to bad route selection and be a turn-off. Share your insider knowledge with someone to get them on a safe, enjoyable ride!
  4. Win prizes: Yep, just by registering and riding you are eligible to win prizes. Sweet!
