About Safe Routes to Schools

Safe Routes to School is a program dedicated to providing safer routes for students to walk and bike to school. When children walk or cycle to school, it improves their self-confidence and academic performance; they get more physical exercise and have lower rates of obesity. In the long run, getting children and parents to rely on walking and cycling instead of cars leads to less traffic and improved air quality and creates healthier, more sustainable communities.

How SABA is Helping

Through a grant from Sacramento County, SABA will be implementing two Safe Routes to Schools programs in the near future at schools in the Bell Avenue and Elkhorn Blvd neighborhoods:

  • 2025-26: San Juan Unified School District - Greer Elementary, Dyer-Kelly Elementary, Encina High School
  • 2026-27: Twin Rivers Unified School District - Village Elementary, Woodridge Elementary, Creative Connections Arts Academy

We will be conducting pedestrian education in lower grades, bicycle driver education in upper elementary. At middle and high school, we'll work on street design and PSA/digital media creations.
