No motor, tandem or three-wheel bikes are allowed. There is no age limit for riders using the bike racks or bringing bikes on board the bus. Regional Transit (serving Sacramento County)
Bus: Buses are equipped with front racks for 2 bikes, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bikes are not allowed inside RT buses unless it is the last bus on the route that day, and the bike rack is full.
Light rail: RT allows four bikes per car, two in the front and two in the back, on multi-car trains. However, in the first car no bikes are permitted at the front of the car, which is reserved for passengers with disabilities. On the last train on the route each day, there is no limit on the number of bikes. Learn more
Roseville Transit (serving Roseville, Rocklin, South Placer County)
All buses are equipped with two front-mounted bike racks, available on a first-come, first-served basis. When the bicycle rack is occupied, a folding bicycle may be brought on board provided: it is already folded and stored in a carrier bag when boarding, and it remains in your control and does not block the aisle at any time. When capacity is an issue, folding bicycles must be stored under an aisle-facing seat (maximum 12″ in height when folded). Learn more
Yolobus (serving Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento and Downtown Sacramento)
All buses have bike racks (front-mounted racks and luggage bay racks) that can accommodate up to three bikes at a time at no charge. Bike racks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bikes are not allowed inside the buses at any time. Bike-riders are responsible for loading and unloading their own bikes (drivers may be available to help). Tandem, motorized, and three-wheeled bikes are not allowed. If the bike rack is full, you will have to wait for the next bus. Learn more
Passenger Rail
Capitol Corridor & San Joaquin trains (Amtrak California)
Bikes may be brought aboard Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin and other Amtrak California trains at no charge. You can find bicycle racks on the lower level of most coach cars.
If all racks are full, notify the conductor. The conductor will do his/her best to identify a place for you to safely secure your bike. Please carry a bungee cord with you, to use in securing your bike.
Most Amtrak motorcoach buses can accommodate a limited number of bicycles. Storage is underneath the motorcoach in the luggage compartment and some buses also have front-of-bus racks. Similar to bicycle access on the trains, passengers must load and unload their bikes. Learn more
Other Amtrak trains
The interstate Amtrak trains that travel outside California, including the Coast Starlight and California Zephyr, have more restrictive rules about bike access than trains operated by Amtrak California (a joint powers authority comprising Amtrak and Caltrans). On these trains bikes may only be brought aboard in a bike box and checked as luggage for $10, and may only be loaded and unloaded at staffed Amtrak stations.
Folding bikes may be brought aboard at no charge, in lieu of luggage. Recumbent, tandem and special bicycles over the standard bicycle dimensions that will not fit in a standard bicycle box are prohibited. Learn more.
