Exciting Changes to SABA’s Volunteer Program!
We’re changing things up and launching volunteer teams to streamline our recruitment efforts and frankly, make volunteering more fun!
Volunteer teams are based on your particular interests and availability, and make it easier to volunteer with your friends, co-workers, teammates, classmates, and riding buddies. Volunteers need not be members of SABA to be involved!
Want to make sure you get to park bikes with your cohort of friends? Sign up for the same bike parking team! Looking to log team-building or volunteer hours with your coworkers? Sign up together!
So what are the ways to get involved with SABA? Here’s the volunteer team line-up:
Valet Bike Parking Team
SABA’s award winning bicycle valet service is our most popular and highest profile program. Every year, SABA volunteers park thousands of bikes at events ranging from summer’s weekly Friday Night Concerts in the Park, group rides like Party Pardee, special events like VeloBall, and various other festivals, fundraisers, and events around town. There will be 4 valet bike parking teams because SABA has so many gigs lined up.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Each of the teams will be called on for a week’s worth of events at a time on a rotating basis throughout the VBP season (April-October). The number of events per week will fluctuate, with more happening in the summer, and volunteers of a VBP team are asked to be available for at least two 3-hour shifts during their week.
Friday Night Concert VBP Team
Volunteers that want to park bikes regularly and more frequently, this team is for you. This team will be heading the valet bike parking charge at the Concerts in the Park every Friday evening during the summer months. The time and place of these events is set so you can plan them more regularly or easily drop-in on this team.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Please be available for a formal 3-hour shift at at least 5 of the 16 Friday Night Concerts.
Headquarters Team
This team is key to keeping the organization spinning smoothly. Get behind the scenes at SABA and help us in a variety of fun ways: hazard reporting, thanking new members and squaring away renewing members, blogging, editing, pick-your-city advocacy tracking, et cetera et cetera. Lots of room for creativity and resume boosting!
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm. We’re looking for five volunteers to take the lead on projects and work with us in the office for several hours every week.
American River Parkway Team
This team stewards the trailhead of the American River Parkway at 20th & C Streets with quarterly planting, invasive plant removal, clean-up, et cetera. Like to garden, be outside, or use this amazing regional asset? This is your team.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Saturday mornings four times a year. The 2012 dates are April 28, September 15, and December 1. One of the dates will always coincide with the Great American River Cleanup in September.
Bike Count Team
Transportation data is essential for cities and planners, and SABA’s bike count team fills this need for Sacramento. Bike counts happen quarterly throughout the City and are reported to the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Weekday evenings about four times a year.
SABA Ambassadors
Represent SABA! Attend events and fairs to promote SABA’s vision and education the public about its mission. Ambassadors will attend a short training to learn the talking points of the organization.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? Please be available to attend a training and at least 3 events a year for a 3-hour shift.
Volunteer Night Team
This team attends the second-Thursday volunteer night and prepares SABA’s monthly membership renewal mailing.
What kind of availability do I need for this team? A few hours on the second Thursday evening of every month.
Other ideas?
Do you have skills or expertise that you’d like to contribute to SABA? Photography? Graphic design? Macrame? Public relations? You name it, we’ll be happy to work with you to create a position. We’re amazed to learn the talents of our members and volunteers.
Ready to get involved? Sign up here! Even if you’re a long-time SABA volunteer, please refresh our memory of your interests so we can be sure to keep you up to date.
